Glycol degradation
Hampton Research measured pH and conductivity of 8 different polyethylene glycols stored in a variety of typical laboratory storage settings over a period of 18 months.
Aqueous solutions of ethylene glyco land propylene glycol produce acidic degradation products upon thermal oxidation. This results in a decrease in pH of the aqueous solutions which could accelerate the corrosion of metallic components of solar collectors. The increase in the concentrations of degradation products in solution was measured over time using the Ion Chromatography Exclusion(ICE) method of analysis
