Why

I am working since years in many and different kind of projects:

  • Professional
  • Hobby
  • Principles
  • Proof of concept
  • Technology evaluation
  • Mechatronic
  • Electronic
  • Mechanical
  • Software
  • Firmware
  • Logistics
  • Bill of Materials
  • ...
  • My targets:
  • I needed a web-based easy to create and maintain platform, capable of supporting many and divert projects.
  • I could not afford to become an HTML, or Web-applications or any kind of expert.
  • I wanted to update the content any time from anywhere
  • The site was not for public use neither for customers
  • The users would be myself and a few persons I work-with
  • Collaboration support with co-workers
  • I wanted this site to become a knowledge-base and documentation-base, for all my past, present, and future projects

Inspired

Inspired by:

  • Mediawiki based WIKIs like below:
sciencezero, sciencezero mediawiki modifications
dangerousprototypes
seeedstudio Garden
  • The nice clean precise an relaxed look and feel of (Mediawiki-based) Wikipedia
  • The ability for collaborative development of the WIKI and the included projects

Server Hosting

I had decided to create mediawiki based WIKI, to document, present and organize the projects.
The easiest way seemed to be: turnkey-mediawiki live CD Turnkey_MediaWiki
But taking in account:

  1. Mediawiki should be installed to a dedicated (server) PC.
  2. The WIKI would not be alive in the internet, but only at local network
  3. The effort needed to connect the local server to internet, and the limited bandwidth

I started thinking of hosting to a free server.

  • Day 1
Using Google search with keywords [mediawiki hosting], I found 3 options:
wikkii
wikia
referata
I created an account to all of them.
wikkii and referata have the known look and feel of mediawiki/Wikipedia.
wikia looks different, it is more organized and has advertisements.

Referata

  • At 2nd day I discovered that at referata:
I can use WYSIWYG editor, so I do not need openoffice+extension how to use openoffice to write mediawiki text
The configuration options (site-settings...) are more.
Still at 2nd day, 3 projects already documented.
  • Day 3
Updating
Small or Large Pieces of Work can be done every day from any internet connected computer.
Contact with the projects is already increased
